Our Plan

Equipping our school to serve our students today and in the future

Based on thorough planning, research, and community engagement, Oakes Public School has developed the Our School, Our Future plan to invest $14.84 million in replacing, renovating, and updating critical heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), windows and plumbing systems, bathrooms in the high school, and the kitchen.

Aging and outdated infrastructure impact teaching, learning, and the student experience. For example, without ADA-compliant bathrooms on the second and third floors of the high school, students with disabilities must take the elevator to the first floor - reducing valuable learning time. In addition, the HVAC system is not fully functional and has limited temperature control, which studies have proven to negatively impact the overall student learning experience.

The proposed Our School, Our Future plan invests in the most critical needs of our building. These improvements will ensure we can provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students and staff.

Proposed updates and renovations:

    • Replace the HVAC system throughout the high school building and gymnasiums.

    • Provide new air handling units, boiler, chiller, pumps, and a digital control system.

    • Update ductwork distribution, piping, ceiling, LED lights, and electrical to accommodate the new system.

    • Install fire protection throughout the three-story portion of the building.

    • Install new windows to optimize the performance of the new HVAC system, reduce energy costs, and address safety concerns.

  • Ensure all students and staff have easy access to ADA-compliant, single-stall bathrooms on all levels of the school, including the second and third floors.

    • Repair deteriorating infrastructure, electrical, and food storage systems.

    • Replace outdated kitchen appliances that have exceeded their life expectancy and can no longer be fixed.

    • Renovate and expand the kitchen area to help kitchen staff work more efficiently.

    • Repair existing sewer pipes to address immediate issues and extend the lifespan of existing infrastructure.

    • Ensure regular upkeep to identify and address potential issues to prevent expensive emergency repairs and replacements.
